Nebbiolo and Nero D'Avola, great red wine grapes

Nebbiolo is a red wine grape grown mostly in the Piedmont region where it is used to make Barolo and Barbaresco wine. But no such monster wines this time, just a Lange DOC wine from producer Fontanafredda. The wine is called Ebbio and is from 2013. The smell is nice and the taste is very subtle. Strong taste of viols and some cherries. A good drinking wine.

Nero D'Avola is a red wine grape mostly grown in Sicily. This grape makes good wine which I like. The wine Regieterre Nero D'Avola from 2012 by producer Musita is made from 100% nero D'Avola grapes. There is a sharpness in the taste and I can feel liquorice, black currants and cherries. A good wine and the third wine from producer Musita that I like.

From Austria to Italy

I have tried the riesling wine from weingut Stadt Krems in Steinterrassen earlier, now I have tried the vintage from 2011.  It is still excellent. The colour is straw yellow with some hits of green.  A lot of acid, excellent structure and so good. I wish I had more bottles at home. Despite the alcohol level is only 12,5 % it goes well together with heavier food such as schnitzel.

The region of Trentino/Alto Adige produces some of Italys finest white wines. I have tried the producer Mezzacorona white dry wine PG. The grapes for this wine is Pinot Grigio and are from the wineyards in the dolomites in the Trentino area. It has an alcohollevel of 13% and is from 2013. The taste if of pears, citrus and some grapefruit in the aftertaste. A good wine.

One place in Italy I would like to visit is the island of Elba, until then I have to do with wine from the island. I have tasted an Elba Bianco from producer Aquabona. It is from 2010 and with an alcohol level of 12,5 %. It is flavourful, some acidity and have a taste of peaches. A very good food wine.

Primitivo from Salento

Primitivo grapes is grown a lot around the Salento region in Puglia. And from this region I had the chance to try the Primtitivo Di Manduria (2013) from producer Paololeo. The colour is dark ruby. The taste is of red cherries, woody with strong chocolate flavour. One can feel the tannins in the back of the throat. Decent wine. Primitivo is the same grape as Zinfandel.

Two white Sicilian wines from producer Musita

When I visited Italy at the end of Italy it was still very cold although the front façade of the Duomo in Bologna was finished with the restorations now. But at least in Sicily it is warmer.

Producer Musita is located in Salemi in the Trapani province of Sicily. Through luck I found myself with two different wines from this producer. Both white wines and containing the grape Catarratto.Although the wine Regieterre Catarratto is from 2013 while Passocalcara Bianco contains also 40% Chardonnay and is from 2012. Both are similar both has differences.
Regiterre Catarratto has a good aromatic smell. The taste is also aromatic and with pears and citrus. Very good. The Passocalcara has a taste of citrus, grapefruit and peaches in a very good mix. Also a very good wine. Sicily continues to impress with its wines.
