Two red wines from Piemonte

Just because there are great Nebbiolo wine from Piemonte such as Barolo and Barbaresco doesn't mean that all Nebbiolo wines from Piemonte are great. Because if Nebbiolo are planted in the wrong parts and in the wrong soil then Nebbiolo wines can be quite tasteless. The producer Madonna Dell'Uva has the Nebbiolo wine of vintage 2015. The ABV is 13%. The taste is a bit sour with some black currants. This wine is lacking something.

Next wine is from producer Borgogno which is a big producer in Piemonte and their red wine Langhe Rosso is their first wine I had the chance to try from them. The vintage is 2016 and the ABV is 13%. It consists of the grapes Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa and Merlot. I get a lot of red fruits on the nose. The taste is of cherries, red fruits and some spices. A very nice wine and goes with food very well as well as a stand alone wine.

France vs Italy

Lets compare a wine from Gascony in France with a wine from Veneto in Italy. Who will win?

The wine from France is a white wine from Gascony, this region is normally known for the Armagnac. The producer is Alain Brumont and the grapes for this wine are Gros Manseng and Sauvignon Blanc. The vintage is 2016 and the ABV is 12%. This wine has a fresh fruity nose. The taste is of pears and grapefruit. A tablewine for me as it screams out for food.

The italian wine is a white wine from Veneto. It is by producer Bottega and is made of the grape Pinot Grigio. The vintage is 2016 and ABV is 12%. The wine has a very nice balance of acidity and the taste is of melons, pears and some grapefruit. A nice wine.

In this battle Italy wins by a small margin.

Red from North and white from South

Let us start with the wine from the north. It is a Barbera wine from producer Fontanafredda and it is called Briccotondo. The wine is from Piemonte and the vintage is 2016. The ABV is 13,5%. The taste is smooth and red fruits and some tannins in the end. A good table wine from Fontanafredda, showcases a good young Barbera wine.

Then we go south to the heel of Italy and the region Puglia. Here we have the producer Paololeo which makes a Fiano wine called Cala Luna. The vintage is 2016 and the ABV is 13,5%. It is a very fresh Fiano, with an aromatic and elegant taste.

Barolo 2011 from Germano

When I visited Barolo last year I had the chance to buy some wines from producer Germano. They have a nice shop in Barolo while the winery is situated near La Morra. I could choose between two vintages and I bought only bottles from the 2011 vintage since I found the 2012 vintage to be a bit stronger and less elegant. I like elegant wine more than strong wines. If you have the time when visiting Barolo please walk between the different villages. It is very nice and one can walk in the vineyards and is very beautiful.

The view from la Morra ins one of the best in the Barolo commune.
The wine is the vintage 2011 and has and ABV of 15,5%. It is a Barolo wine made from Nebbiolo grapes from the vineyard Vigna Rue. In the nose I get red fruits and some alcohol in a nice mixture. The taste is of tobacco, black currants, cherries and some dark chocolate. I think it is very complex and has an elegant character. It has tannins in the back of the mouth but they are quite well balanced. I like this wine quite a lot. I think this wine a great aging potential. An excellent Barolo.
